Biography

Born in Rochefort, France, Jean-Claude Chauray was a self taught painter who did not ally himself to any school of painting. Chauray had an exceptional gift for reproducing to perfection the still life; he created paintings with brilliant mirrored surfaces and scintillating, life-like images. His subjects: fruits, glass objects, porcelain and even butterflies are painted flawlessly. He exhibited regularly in Paris from the early 1950's and by the 1960's he was exhibiting annually in Tokyo and Osaka, Japan.  He was a member of the Salon des Indépendant, Salon des artistes français,  Salon des Comparaisons, and the Salon des Terres Latines. The French Government honored him by awarding him the Croix de Chavalier des Arts. In 1994 the legendary French porcelain manufacturer Bernaudeu honored the artist with a collection of fine ceramics featuring his designs that are still in production.
